Galleons were the dominant sailing ships navigating the oceans in the 16th century. Their design was seaworthy, with the purpose of trade & treasure combined with the ability to survive intense battles, features remained to the last of the full rigged sailing ships. These were called “Prestige Ships”.
Blue Galleon is a company organized to source, import, and distribute products that are healthier for you. Founded in the 20th century, and like the grand galleons before her, Blue Galleon navigates the business currents with a focus on quality, excellence, standards, and intention.
Blue Galleon seafood products are better for you. They are a good source of calcium and a natural source of Omega-3. They provide protein, co-q10, and a host of other beneficial minerals and vitamins.
Blue Galleon products are better for the environment and fish stocks. We fish species that are plentiful in magnitude and incorporate catch methods that ensure sustainability. Specifically we use sustainable fishing practices including Pole & Line Caught Tuna, and Marine Stewardship Certified wild Alaskan Salmon.
Blue Galleon products are better for the people who work in the industry. We work with local communities and use “Fair-Trade-Like” principles to guide our interactions with primary fishers. For example we work with the Tlingit Nation of the Taku Rive Basin in northern British Columbia.
Intent on providing US customers with quality seafood products from traditional communities, Blue Galleon began as the exclusive importer and distributor of BELA-Olhão brand canned sardines from Portugal. These sardines offer the advantage of being a classic sardine (species: Sardina Pilchardue Walbaum) located in the waters of Portugal. BELA-Olhão Portuguese sardines are caught by local fishers and packed fresh within hours resulting in a product that is healthier, looks better, has less smell, and taste far better than other brands and varieties.
Due to the success of BELA sardines, and our support of "fair trade-like" principles, we have now extended our line to include several gourmet quality seafood products. Blue Galleon launched the popular BELA-Olhão Skipjack Tuna Steaks in easy-open cans. Wildcatch brand canned Alaskan sockeye salmon was soon to follow. We recently announced the Taku Wild brand smoked sockeye salmon in shelf-stable pouches. Look for Wildcatch frozen salmon this fall 2004.
